No pudimos haber entrado de una manera más zaigüera a Venezuela, la Gran Sabana nos estaba esperando para dejarnos extasiados con parajes y gente increíble.
La Gran Sabana se encuentra al sur de Venezuela y limita con Brasil y Guyana. Entre sus límites se encuentra el Parque Nacional Canaima, famoso internacionalmente por albergar la cascada más alta del mundo, el Salto del Ángel con casi un kilómetro de caída. Para nosotros iba a ser imposible llegar hasta el Salto del Ángel ya que no hay ninguna carretera que te lleve hasta la caída del agua y para llegar al punto más cercano hay que tomar un avión o hacer una caminata de varios días. Sin embargo el Canaima es mucho más que el Salto del Ángel y de la mano de los Pemones, los Tepuis y Miguel y George nos hemos ido maravillando de esta región a cada kilómetro.
Los Pemones es el pueblo indígena de esta región. En realidad son tres grupos diferentes pero cuando tuvieron su primer contacto con los criollos, hace menos de un siglo, a todos los “bautizaron” como Pemones. Tienen su propia lengua y también hablan castellano ya que por muchos estuvieron bajo la tutela de misiones católicas españolas.
Los Tepuis son montañas en cuya cima hay una meseta, son montañas sin pico, y cada uno tiene su propio microclima con una variedad de fauna y flora que varía de un tepui a otro. A Miguel y George ya los presentaremos más adelante.
Ayer salimos de Santa Elena y a unos 30
kilómetros paramos en la Quebrada del Jaspe. Hemos visto muchos ríos y arroyos pero como éste ninguno, un río cuyo fondo es una gran losa de jaspe roja tiene que haber pocos en el mundo. El lugar
no es apto para darse un baño ya que apenas hay profundidad pero es una delicia caminar en medio del río viendo como el fondo toma diferentes tonalidades según su exposición al
sol.
Nuestra segunda y última parada de ayer fue en la comunidad de Paraitepui, enfrente del Tepui Roraima, el más alto
de la región. Llegar hasta aquí no fue nada fácil, de hecho tuvimos mucha suerte. Desde la carretera general hay que desviarse poco más de 20 kilómetros para llegar hasta la comunidad, pero el
camino es casi impracticable para cualquier vehículo que no sea 4x4. Nosotros decidimos arriesgarnos y aunque estuvimos en varias ocasiones a punto de quedarnos atorados debido a las pendientes y
a los enormes socavones, pudimos llegar a Paraitepui después de una hora de camino, eso sí, el trayecto mereció totalmente la pena.
Paraitepui es una pequeña comunidad Pemón que es utilizada como punto de salida para los montañistas que suben el Roraima. No hay comercios y el único hospedaje son unas cabañas situadas en el mirador. Nosotros pedimos permiso para quedarnos en el mirador y muy amablemente nos cedieron un espacio. Las vistas desde aquí son increíbles, es muy difícil hallar un día en el que el Roraima este completamente despejado pero aun así pudimos ver claramente su majestuosidad. Una de sus características, además de ser el tepui más alto y el que mayor biodiversidad contiene en su cima, es que también es triple frontera entre Venezuela, Brasil y Guayana, teniendo Venezuela la mayor parte de su territorio. También es uno de los pocos que se puede subir caminando (son entre 4 y 6 días de trekking ida y vuelta)sin tener que escalar sus paredes.
En este enclave pasamos la noche de ayer y buena parte de esta mañana. Cuando regresamos a la carretera general, nos encontramos con Miguel y George, los guías de la agencia Tucán Amazónico, que junto a Rafael, el conductor, y Vanesa y Eloise, dos turistas francesas, estaban haciendo un tour por Venezuela de varios días. Estuvimos charlando un rato con ellos y nos invitaron a que nos subiéramos a su 4x4 para ir con ellos a algunos puntos en los que no podíamos llegar con nuestra combi. En un principio estábamos un poco reticentes de dejar así la Zaigua pero nos aseguraron que no iba a pasar nada y enseguida nos pusimos los bañadores para dirigirnos hasta la Poza Azul.
Este pequeño “paraíso” está fuera de toda ruta turística y no está señalizado, nosotros nunca hubiéramos llegado allá con la Zaigua y nos hubiéramos perdido una bonita perla de la Gran Sabana. El camino parecía que nos llevaba a cualquier lugar de la Sabana pero al llegar a una quebrada, miramos hacia abajo y un oasis se hizo presente. Una pequeña cascada de agua cristalina que terminaba en una poza con playa incluida, si buscábamos el lugar perfecto para bañarnos, lo encontramos.
Después nos llevaron hasta otros miradores desde los cuales se podía ver la Gran Sabana de una y mil maneras. A la vez, nos fueron contando muchas historias de la región y de la historia y la sociedad venezolana. De repente nos habíamos incluido en uno de los mejores tours en los que hemos estado ya que comenzamos a comprender muchas realidades de la actualidad de Venezuela.
De regreso nos animaron a que hiciéramos noche con ellos en una pequeña comunidad para ir a ver mañana una cascada de más de 100 metros de altura. El problema era que había que dejar la Zaigua a medio camino en un puesto del ejército ya que el camino era solo apto para vehículos 4x4. De nuevo nos volvieron a asegurar que todo iba a estar bien y en contra de todas las recomendaciones que mucha gente nos había hecho de mantenernos lejos de los militares no solo dejamos a la combi enfrente de su puesto de control sino que ni siquiera vamos a pasar la noche con ella… Ojalá que como dicen ellos todo este bien. Por cierto, antes paramos a repostar pero la gasolinera ya estaba cerrada (en los estados fronterizos las gasolineras cierran a las 18:00 por causas del contrabando) y los chicos nos regalaron su reserva de 25 litros, como decía Miguel “el agua y la gasolina no se les puede negar a nadie”, algo que solo pasa en Venezuela.
Ya de noche emprendimos camino hasta llegar al campamento Toron-Kan, regentado por una pareja de Pemones. Aunque ya era tarde, la señora nos preparó cena para todos (con licor de ron y hormigas incluido) y ahora nos estamos alistando para dormir después de un día tan zaigüero como el de hoy. Nos han dejado un espacio dentro de su restaurante para descansar y mañana continuaremos con nuestra pequeña aventura por la Gran Sabana, ni nosotros mismos nos creemos esta entrada a Venezuela, y que continúe!!
